Celery, a humble hero?

Celery – that slightly awkward, stalky veggie whose highest and best use was once a vessel for peanut butter, has nearly broken Instagram. The once humble celery is now deemed a superfood by many…particularly in juice form, and has a lot of people talking about it. While we believe that there is no silver bullet for health, and that true long-term wellness is a much broader conversation, celery (and its juice) is worth a closer look.
From curing cancer to helping with infertility, social media is blowing up with stories of transformation and healing. While we don’t care much for hype, there is strong evidence to support the fact that raw celery (chewable and juiced) is beneficial for health. In fact, celery has been used for centuries as a natural healing agent. There is a growing body of research proving the benefits of celery juice, and the countless stories of healing are compelling.
So, why celery juice? The list of potential benefits is long, but here are a few things celery can do for our bodies and minds that we feel are most universal…
Reduce inflammation / fight disease
While every human body is different, celery juice can be one of the most anti-inflammatory elixirs one can consume. Many have experienced an easing of arthritis pain and headaches through celery juice, rivaling commercial anti-inflammatory drugs. The experts say, specific compounds found in celery – apigenin and luteolin – are bioactive flavonoids (hello, fancy medical term). Basically, these compounds are naturally occurring plant pigments that fight inflammation and disease in the body. For example, apigenin works as an antioxidant that can cause cancer cells to self-destruct, and luteolin can reduce inflammation in the brain, supporting memory.
Lower blood pressure
Potassium and magnesium are important components of managing blood pressure, and celery juice is chock-full of both. Experts say celery also contains a phytochemical called phthalides, that is known to relax the tissues of the artery walls, increasing blood flow and reducing blood pressure.
Detox and cleanse
Celery juice is known as an amazing internal cleanser. It’s an alkalizing elixir that balances the body’s pH and flushes out toxins. An acidic body promotes cancer, so the alkalizing effect can keep your systems clean and push cancer cells out.
Promote skin health
Rich in vitamin C, K, and A, celery has been found to aid in a variety of skin conditions, including acne, psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea. It can also be effective in helping to reduce the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and scars. So glow, baby, glow.
Aid digestion
Potent antioxidants found in celery can help to relax your gut, stimulating the production of stomach acid. Low stomach acid can cause things like heartburn, indigestion, and bloating. Celery juice can help you deal with gut imbalances and fight the bloat…and maybe even allow you to start buttoning that top button of your jeans while running errands (We’ve all been there).
Hydrate and recover
A great post-exercise drink, celery juice rehydrates your cells, adding electrolytes to keep you feeling strong and energized without a high caloric intake, high sugar content, or artificial flavors of many post-workout beverages.
Calm (as in, woosahhhh)
When the body is supplied with the right nutrients, minerals, electrolytes, and pH is balanced, the nervous system lets out a big happy sigh, and we become more relaxed. Rich in the calming mineral magnesium, celery juice can enhance balanced relaxation of body and mind. Namaste, juice fans.
Support healthy weight loss
Highly nutritious celery juice is very low in calories, giving your body the fuel it needs without the added lbs. The low caloric content, paired with the numerous health benefits mentioned above, can make for a powerful, weight-loss promoting, and healing elixir.
In sum
Net net: While there is no silver bullet for health, celery can be a health hero in its original (chewable) raw form or in the form of juice, as part of a broader balanced diet.
With high quality, organic, raw, professionally cold-pressed juice, you can give your digestive system a little holiday and let celery juice do the work, healing and hydrating you from the inside out. Celery juice is also amazing cold-pressed with other vegetables and fruits – like our favorite blend “Rescue,” that includes a smidge of green apple and lemon to make the celery taste more interesting.
At Zen Donkey Farms, our team drinks cold-pressed, raw, organic celery juice on the regular, and we have only wonderful things to say. Most notably, it simply makes us feel amazing – perhaps it’s an extra jolt of energy, an added brightness from the hydration, eased digestion...we haven’t yet put our finger on it. We’ll keep our eyes on the numerous studies and research being done on the subject. For now, it feels good and we want to keep it flowing.
Join us in the journey and check out ZDF’s organic, raw, cold-pressed juices and celery memberships! You can also learn more about how our juice has a special purpose.
